To state briefly state STEM is a acronym for: Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. Two of those, Science & Mathematics, are mandatory classes required to be taken throughout the education system. It is also one of the most versatile classes that is the most used in the future. The other two, Engineering & Technology, are just one of the growing fields in our society that is increasing growing in demand. So the demand for these STEM classes are becoming more and more important in the education system. The problem is though students are having a very hard time understanding these classes do to there difficulty. Also many students are just uninterested in these fields and choose not to participate in the classes, when the field keeps growing in demand.
That is what this "star wars program" is trying to fix, the dis interest in the STEM programs. By using the Growing popular trend of the star wars genre, to make the Stem classes more relate-able to struggling students. Because what they have shown most students are willing to learn if they are interested with the classes they are taking. So if a student finds a class pointless they will be less willing to learn and listen. Compared to if they are interested where the students will excel within there classes. Such as Amelia one of the students, 1 of 20, that attended this program because they where struggling in the STEM classes. like the other students in the program she was interested with star wars and using this program. They essentially gave the students had a way to relate to to these STEM classes Which is essentially the best way to make students learn. By giving those STEM classes relevance to the real world, where there are many relations between the real world and STEM. to our phones, cars and home appliances. So I believe programs like this should definitely be supported do to the increase in these STEM carrier fields. The demand for these occupation are even more important. So hopefully more of these programs are funded for the betterment of the future.

In the article they are trying to see what creates a genius pure birth or being taught to be one. through studies they have determined that there are key traits people must have such as ambition, a will to learn and curiosity. Because it was found that people can't really be good at something if they don't enjoy perusing. It has also been found as they say in the article that genius may be just result naturally from birth but there is no way you can rule out it can't be learned.
So in sense that i can utilizes is that you should never be discouraged by your IQ or learning method. That to really learn try to find a way to enjoy it because if you enjoy it you will develop those traits of finding new information. An the true geniuses of the world are not defined by there IQ but there will to learn. I think out of most people I have met or heard of have ever had a spot on veiw of the education problem in american than Ken Robinson. He talks about how the drop out rate is so high because kids are supposed to follow this narrow path that limits and bores kids in school. Where kids should be allowed to build there on path based of the main educations ( math, science, english and history). In a very effective way, with witty retoric, humor and metaphors. that can be directly related to every day life.
Where Genuis hour is a project that tries to improve that consept of letting the students thrive on there on and learn something that no teacher could. because as he described teachers should not be spoon feeding you word for word out of a book. they should be the railway the puts you on the right track to success. The Author of this article thinks that being a genius is to not fit the norm or not just answer a problem with just one way. Like if you asked them to pick apples they just wouldn't start just grabbing apples they might try different ways to start picking like using a stick to knock them down, shake the tree, or grab a ladder to get them. Which he believes makes them more in depth thinkers and can find new ways of doing thing because they don't accept the normal ways. Also he says in the article that many geniuses don't have a picture perfect life most not having a father or a mother, growing up. The biggest thing he talked about though, which I believe to be the overall topic was they where great with comparing thing and giving relations to two completely different objects. Like many geniuses studied using metaphors which made them see at different angels.
Which is big part of my genius hour helping people see new was to draw and design. like there is more than one way to draw a circle in fact there is thousands of ways, and that's what i want to do with my genius hour show people how many ways you can accomplish amazing pieces. Even if you think you cant do it. An that's what motivates me about my Genius hour The article describes how many kids take pride into to their Genius hour project, and it shows a couple techniques on how to expand them. Also to get support, like some of the examples where bi weekly emails to parents to keep their project well updated. It also expands upon how some kids have a hard time picking up a genius hour project because they can find something to make it on, which is one of the big problems with getting teachers on board. Especially when so many kids who do get hooked into their genius hour they make something amazing, like making fully working pinewood derby cars. Also the article touches on how the students are still learning even though they are having fun which is one of the hardest things teachers have faced when assigning big projects such as this, making it engaging.
What I have seen in this article that will help me out is. That many of the genius hours are more physical than digital, like how many of the students created models and set up fundraiser. Inspires me to do something more than just a website like a could create a art show to fundraiser money for art supplies to schools, or design class rooms to make rooms more engaging for improve student focus. I could also do the weekly emails to keep my genius hour informed to my parents. So could make more that just a website. A lot of People believe being a good drawer or designer comes natural at birth. I beg to differ, sure a lot of people don't have the patience to sit down and draw for an hour, but with practice comes improvement. An with my website I plan on teaching those who may be challenged in drawing ,and design how to improve.
By posting weekly tips and tricks I believe that I can help these people improve. So one day they can draw eloquent drawings such as this. It may seem impossible but with my website I plan to make it plausible. Because the best way to express yourself is through something you create, and the best way to do this is through art |
